Speculative Fiction Book Club: Black Water Sister

Speculative Fiction Book Club: Black Water Sister In-Person

Do you like to read science fiction, urban fantasy, and horror? This is the book club for you! Come chat with other fans of these imaginative and weird genres, as we discuss books by a diverse group of new and established authors in this expansive category of stories that ask “What if…?”

We will have copies of the book available for you to check out a month ahead of time. You don't need to put a hold on your own copy, just ask for one at the circulation desk.

For now, this club will meet virtually on Zoom. Please register ahead of time to receive the link. Questions? Email Kat at kgoodschiff@westath.org

Jessamyn Teoh is closeted, broke and moving back to Malaysia, a country she left when she was a toddler. When she hears a voice in her head, it is the ghost of her estranged grandmother, Ah Ma, who was the medium of a terrifying deity called the Black Water Sister. Ah Ma is determined to settle a score against a gang boss who has offended the god, and she's decided Jess is going to help her do it.

We sold our souls by Grady Hendrix - October 12, 2021

A has-been heavy metal artist discovers that her failed band's lead singer sold their souls in a Faustian exchange for his solo-career fame and fortune. “Hendrix’s pulpy love letter to heavy metal music is a gloriously over-the-top scare fest that has hidden depths.” - Publisher’s Weekly

The Deep by Rivers Solomon - November 9, 2021

The historian of the water-dwelling descendants of pregnant African slaves thrown overboard by slavers keeps all the memories of her people both painful and miraculous, until she discovers that their future lies in returning to the past. “This slim story packs a huge punch. Beautiful and stark in its pain, this emotional journey is one that all readers should take.” - Library Journal
